Black Bird: Black Bird is based off the song by the Beatles. It demonstrates the message in the actual music itself. The lyrics read "black bird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly." This lyric is a statement based off of segregation of African Americans back in the 60's. In my drawing I drew a forest of white birch trees in a night setting. There is a crow flying up towards the moon. Below two wooden signs with arrows pointing in opposite direction read "crows" and "doves." The birds are used as a metaphor for segregation.
Octopuses garden is another piece based off of the Beatles song. Unlike black bird this beach is much more literate. Not touching any deeper message it merrily depicts what the song is setting up in your mind, Using colour in as well as black and white become a continuous theme in this piece as well as black bird and piece number three. My third piece is based off of David Bowie's song Space Oddity. The image shows Bowie himself smoking a cigarette where the smoke appears as a starry sky. Bowie died recently quite tragically due to a battle with cancer. In the image I have tried to depict him as a the Space Oddity Major Tom becomes in his song. the line "the stars look very different today" I've used as a way of where he is now and how he sees the stars. |
