In what way have the mediums we use made us a culture of passivity and egotism?
The age of the selfie, promoting people to take abundant amounts of photos of themselves and post it on social media for others to see. Social media in the visual form has made people more superficial and shallow. A society based off how everyone looks rather than on more important things like personality and intelligence. Neil Postman stated “...Americans no longer talk to each other, they entertain each other. They do not exchange ideas, they exchange images. They don’t argue with propositions, they argue with good looks, celebrities and commercials.” Neil Postman stated this in his novel back in 1985. Almost three decades later this remains just as true and has only gotten worse. Now we have cellphones social medias like facebook, snapchat and instagram that are all visually based. Everyone is obsessed with themselves and they don’t even realize it because it is normal for this time. Egotism is projected through our screens every day showing us celebrities telling us ways to better ourselves physically. We live in a culture that loves itself.
